The Boston Globe and STAT Recognized with National Murrow Awards

The Globe wins top praise for Overall Excellence among large digital organizations; STAT sweeps categories for small digital organizations

BOSTON, August 15, 2025 — The Boston Globe and STAT are proud to announce that they have been awarded 2025 Edward R. Murrow Awards in multiple categories. This recognition underscores an unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity, innovation, and excellence in news reporting for the two Boston Globe Media brands.

The Edward R. Murrow Awards, presented by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA), are among the most respected journalism awards in the world, celebrating outstanding achievements in technical prowess and the responsibility of journalism as service to the public. The awards are a testament to the dedication of both the Boston Globe and STAT in delivering high-quality storytelling that informs, engages, and impacts the community.

For the second year in a row, The Boston Globe was chosen for Overall Excellence among Large Digital News Organizations. The investigative reporting in The Boston Globe’s Sandra Birchmore’s death: Red flags missed, evidence overlooked, trust broken won for Feature Reporting.

“We are so honored to be recognized for overall excellence for the second year in a row. We are also gratified to see the recognition for the outstanding reporting behind our Sandra Birchmore reporting, which was an investment in uncovering the truth for her,” said Nancy Barnes, Editor of The Boston Globe “We don’t do our work for awards, but we are nonetheless thrilled to see that the hard work of this newsroom, which brings it all every single day, is consistently recognized as among the best in the country.

STAT, known for its in-depth reporting on health, medicine, and scientific discovery, was honored among small digital organizations with an impressive four awards across the news site. Embedded Bias won for Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Health Care’s Colossus won for Investigative Reporting, and Coercive Care won for both Excellence in Writing and Feature Reporting.

“We are humbled by this recognition that shows the wide range and inspired ambition of our relatively small newsroom, from narrative projects to investigations to features to business and science reporting,’’ said Rick Berke, STAT’s co-founder and executive editor. “Our work is more important than ever at this time of unprecedented disruption in health and medicine.’’

The recognition of both the Boston Globe and STAT in the Murrow Awards highlights their roles as leaders in the media industry, consistently producing journalism that serves regional and national communities.
