Boston Globe Media Tentpole Events: A New Era of Innovation in Revenue Strategy

Recent award win recognizes community commitment and excellence.

BOSTON, September 25, 2025Boston Globe Media was recently honored by the Online News Association with a 2025 Online Journalism Award for “Innovation in Revenue Strategy” in the large newsroom category for its tentpole events. This award recognizes Boston Globe Media’s innovative strategy of integrating journalism with community-focused tentpole events to create a sustainable and repeatable revenue model.

Over the past year, Boston Globe Media has reshaped its editorial calendar and events into a tentpole model. This year-long program is designed to enhance journalism, engage new audiences, and serve multiple communities, ultimately establishing a strong revenue stream that supports its mission.

2024/2025 Boston Globe Media Tentpole Events Included:

Each event is deeply rooted in journalism, reflecting the organizational commitment to covering significant topics such as health inequities and the burgeoning technology sector in the region. Journalists play a pivotal role in developing event content and moderating panels, ensuring that each event resonates with readers and regional stakeholders.

The financial impact of these events is substantial as each tentpole event aims for a six-figure goal with positive margins. Revenue streams are diversified, including event sponsorships, ticket sales, sponsored content, traditional print advertising, and digital campaigns that reach millions. Paid partnerships are clearly noted to maintain the integrity of its journalism.

The success of these events is evident, with tickets selling out and a growing waitlist, demonstrating their appeal to the community. The inaugural Working Mothers Summit, for instance, attracted over 300 in-person attendees and more than 800 virtual guests, with a waitlist exceeding 100 people.

“Boston Globe Media is committed to offering a diverse range of topics and unique event experiences, setting a benchmark for regional media companies,” said Erika Hale, Vice President of Events & Sponsorships, Boston Globe Media. “Our tentpole events not only generate revenue but also fulfill our mission to serve the community in innovative ways.”
