2026 Summer Internship Program

The Boston Globe summer internship program offers opportunities to gain journalism experience at a major news organization. 

The program hires reporters in the News, Business, Sports, and Living/Arts departments as well as a photographer, designer, and copy editor. Internships are NOT limited to students pursuing journalism majors.

Eligible are all students currently enrolled in an undergraduate program; graduating college seniors (May or June 2026 graduation date) and enrolled graduate school students. 

This paid program is full-time and lasts 12 weeks. There is a writing coach for the reporting interns, and discussions with editors and staff on a range of topics for all interns.

Boston Globe Media Co-op Program

The Boston Globe co-op program, implemented in 1937, offers undergraduate students an entry-level opportunity to become familiar with the operations of a daily news organization, whether they’re interested in the editorial or the business side of Boston Globe Media.

The co-op program provides students with an opportunity to attain real-life work experience related to their field of study. Our co-ops are put into real jobs and have profound job responsibility. It is our mission that students leave their Boston Globe co-op with applicable experience, reliable best practices, and a stronger professional network.

ELIGIBILITY

• Full time undergraduate students with a minimum of one-semester of school remaining at the time of the co-op assignment

• Ability to work full-time 37.5 hours per week

• Minimum GPA 3.0

SALARY

• $15/hour (paid weekly)

• All students become members of the Boston Newspaper Guild (union)

STAT Internship Program

STAT offers a variety of internship opportunities throughout the year, most of which are approximately 12 weeks in length. STAT hosts AAAS Mass Media Fellows every summer as well as a Director’s Intern from Harvard’s Institute of Politics

Internship experience

• Interns at STAT are, in essence, general assignment reporters who handle daily news stories as well as longer trend pieces, profiles and other features. Interns should expect some assignments, including coverage of the latest news from scientific journals, and stories for STAT+, our premium service for subscribers. However, we also encourage the development of reporters’ own ideas.

• Interns will be assigned an editor, who will be their source for most things at STAT, including mentorship.

• Interns will also have a chance to participate in intern-only programming such as Lunch-and-Learns, which are topic-specific events aimed at helping interns tackle and learn about specific aspects of health and science journalism. Previous Lunch-and-Learn sessions have focused on navigating complex source relationships with major health tech companies as well as finding the not-so-obvious scientific angles for a feature story. 

• Interns will also have a chance to participate in intern-only programming such as Lunch-and-Learns, which are topic-specific events aimed at helping interns tackle and learn about specific aspects of health and science journalism. Previous Lunch-and-Learn sessions have focused on navigating complex source relationships with major health tech companies as well as finding the not-so-obvious scientific angles for a feature story. 

• Interns who are able to be in Boston for their internship will have the opportunity to step out to local conferences and the myriad hospitals and academic institutions to report out stories or find new story ideas. 

• Interns will also have an opportunity to participate in the many events we have at STAT, both social and professional. 

Those who have interned at STAT have gone on to have successful freelancing assignments with major scientific publications and have been hired by some of these outlets (including STAT, although this is not a guarantee).

ELIGIBILITY
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Although STAT is headquartered in Boston, we have staff all over the U.S., and will do our best to accommodate those who cannot relocate to Boston.
QUALIFICATIONS

• The most successful candidates for an internship at STAT are those who have a foundation of reporting experience at their college publications and/or have freelanced or interned for other publications.

• We prefer — but do not require — that candidates have a degree in journalism, especially those with an emphasis in science writing. STAT will also consider journalists who have no background in science or health reporting but want to transition to such a beat.

• We especially value those who will bring a different set of experiences than what we may have otherwise seen at STAT, so we highly encourage members of groups who have been traditionally underrepresented in journalism, and specifically science journalism, to apply. 

SALARY
  • Interns will receive an hourly rate of $18 and work full-time.
