BOSTON, September 18 — As STAT marks its 10th anniversary as a leading media company focused on health and medicine, it has appointed two experienced business leaders to new positions as vice presidents.

Brittany Whitmore has been named vice president, commercial strategy. Whitmore joined STAT in 2016, just eight months into its existence, and over nine years, has built STAT’s commercial offerings, including an in-house branded content studio, a native-first approach, and a robust program of partnership opportunities. Taking her experience at established media companies (Hearst, Condé Nast) as well as a digital-first startup (PureWow), she designed STAT’s approach to be the best of both “old” and “new” media techniques. In her new role, Whitmore will be the company lead on sponsorship revenue strategy, working across departments to drive sponsorship growth, unlock new revenue opportunities, and strengthen STAT’s position as a trusted advertising partner in the health and life sciences space.

Denise Thayer is taking on the role of vice president, advertising & revenue operations, where she will focus on shaping and executing STAT’s revenue strategy. With 25 years of sales experience, Denise joined STAT after serving as head of business development at HubWeek. She has been with STAT for more than five years, first as a brand partnerships director before being promoted to head of brand partnerships the following year. In that role, she led a team responsible for generating more than 60% of STAT’s overall revenue.

Thayer will partner closely with Whitmore and Brittany Cipriano, STAT’s senior director of events & community, on new product strategy, ensuring that STAT’s commercial strategy evolves in step with market demand while driving growth and expanding revenue streams.

STAT will also begin a national search for a new role: senior vice president, growth & content strategy. Working with business and editorial leaders to drive STAT’s continued profitability, this role will oversee strategic content priorities, including identifying new initiatives, market opportunities, and products to boost reader engagement and subscriptions.

“We have a powerhouse business team, and this new structure positions STAT for continued growth, success, and innovation for the next 10 years,” said Rick Berke, STAT’s co-founder and executive editor. “From our launch 10 years ago, we’ve shown that first-class journalism can support a successful, sustainable business.”

These changes come after the departure of Angus Macaulay, STAT’s chief operating officer who was appointed to a new role with Boston Globe Media as chief commercial officer.

Just last week, STAT marked its 10th anniversary. Ten years — and nearly 40,000 stories and opinion essays — later, STAT is proud that its reporting has expanded the public understanding of the worlds of health and medicine, and made a difference.
